CBN Vs. CBD?

Many people don’t realize that there is a huge difference between CBN and CBD. While both CBN and CBD share several medicinal properties, they interact in the body and in their composition very differently. Both are cannabidiols however, they interact quite differently and CBD has very low amounts, if any, of THC while CBN is a direct result of the THC slowly turning over the course of time that it’s subjected to heat and light. Both products hold a niche in the medical benefits, however, for anyone who is trying to avoid THC and the side effects, CBN would not be the route to go.

It’s easy to get caught up in all the hype of how one product is better than the other, however, before jumping to conclusions, it’s important to know what each product does and how they work. The more a person knows and understands the products, the more likely they are to select the product that will best meet their needs.

What Is CBN?

CBN stands for cannabinol. It’s formed as an oxidation process from the THC as it’s exposed to heat and light. Over the course of time, THC that is exposed to heat and light will become stronger until it oxidizes into CBN. The longer it’s left in the light and exposed to heat, the higher the levels of CBN. This can be done in a few different ways including exposing the product to heat and light, lighting the product on fire or heating the product in the oven. This process is called decarboxylation.

CBN alone is not believed to cause a high as THC does. However, there is still a lot of research out there regarding the intoxicating effects of CBN. The high that one derives from CBN is due to the fact that it binds with the CB1 receptors in the body causing the intoxicating effect. CBN cannot be produced except by the oxidation process of the THC breaking down in heat and light.

CBN is a mild sedative that can have some psychoactive side effects on the brain. It can be found in edibles, vape products, tinctures, sublingual sprays, capsules, and other products that contain CBD. The longer the products are exposed to heat and light, the stronger the levels of CBN will be within the product.

CBN also works to help relieve pain, as an antibacterial agent, and as an anti-convulsant product. It’s frequently used to help treat anxiety and insomnia as well as to reduce pain and speed healing to the body via the antibacterial properties.

The most common side effects of CBN are tiredness, loss of appetite, and dizziness. To help reduce these side effects CBN should be taken in the smallest dosage possible. Just as other forms of edibles, CBN may take as long as two hours to work its way through the digestive system.

What Is CBD?

CBD is non-psychoactive cannabidiol that ha virtually no levels of THC. The THC is the compound in cannabidiols that causes the psychoactive high. CBD can be derived from hemp which has less than 0.3% THC or from Marijuana. These levels should all be clearly labeled on the products sold on the market today.

CBD binds to the body’s naturally occurring cannabidiols to help reduce pain and inflammation a well as to help induce sleep and reduce anxiety. Higher levels of THC can cause more anxiety so it’s important to read the labels closely and understand the various options on the market today.

CBD can also be found in edibles, vape products, tinctures, sublingual sprays, capsules, and other products. Again, it’s vital to remember that edibles can take up to two hours to begin working as they must first clear the digestive system.

How Do CBN And CBD Work?

In order for CBN and CBD to work, they must first be introduced into the body. This can be done via edibles or ingesting the products, smoking the product or vaping the product into the lungs, tinctures and sublingual sprays, or dabbing.

Once the product is in the body, it will circulate into the bloodstream and finally into the brain where it will combine with other naturally forming cannabinoids in the brain. Once the CBN or CBD have bound themselves to the naturally forming cannabinoids in the brain, they will work to help enhance the body’s natural healing ability. They work to reduce pain and inflammation, reduce or eliminate seizures, and help to regulate the body’s naturally occurring cannabinoids.

What Are The Differences Of CBN And CBD?

CBN and CBD are two very different components found in hemp and marijuana. Both work to reduce pain, inflammation, and anxiety, however, they have slightly different levels of cannabidiol and the CBN may also have an oxidized form of the THC that it’s formed from. The longer the product is exposed to heat and light the more likely it is to oxidize and change form.

While both products are very similar, they are also very different in that they work differently on the body and produce a different result. On their own, neither product will make a person high. However, when combined with other forms of cannabidiols, they will increase the risk of an intoxicating effect.

CBD works to tone down the effect of a high when it’s combined with any form of THC while CBN will give a more sedative high that may be very helpful for those who are seeking a reduction in anxiety and relief from insomnia.

What Is Decarboxylation?

Many people mistakenly believe that they can simply grow a few marijuana plants and have a steady supply of CBN and CBD. Unfortunately, they are very misinformed. In order to have the desired results after harvesting the plant materials, the materials must first go through a decarboxylation process.

This process helps to break the product down so that it will be more effective and improve the absorption rate into the body. The first method is to simply light it on fire. However, it’s important to completely understand the process and not just simply take a match to the plant materials and light it on fire. It must be processed properly and for the right amount of time and in the right fashion to be able to reap the most benefits from the product.

The other method is to bake it in the oven. Again, it’s important to remember that the process must be done properly for the maximum possible benefits. The heat will break apart the bonds that bind the materials together so that the various products can be separated for use.

There is also a method in which the plant materials are simply left on a shelf exposed to the air, sunlight, and heat. This will work as well, however, it can take several days to a few weeks to net the end result so most commercial operations have some form of heat method that they use to decarb the products.

Choosing The Right Form

Now that it’s understood what the difference in CBN and CBD is, it’s time to choose what will work best for the purpose intended. It’s an individual choice and understanding the differences in the two different forms will go far in helping someone to choose the right product for their needs. The product can be smoked, inhaled or vaped, eaten in an edible form, taken in a tincture, or used in baking or cooking.

It’s also important to keep in mind that results can take up to two hours depending on the way that the product is ingested. Keep in mind a well that the dosages will vary according to the individual. Always start with the smallest dosage possible and slowly work up to a higher dosage if required. Allow at least two hours prior to upping a dosage and find what works best for the needs of the individual.

Are There Any Side Effects To CBN And CBD?

At present, there are no known side effects of either CBN or CBD. Unlike other medications that are used to treat cancer, insomnia, anxiety, and pain, CBN and CBD have no known side effects. They work with the body to help resolve the medical issues that they are taken for. They don’t cause hair loss or impair judgment to the degree that a person is fully incapacitated. However, until a person understands and knows how the products affect their body, it’s important to not operate machinery or drive.

It’s important to understand the differences between the two different products before using them to treat any medical condition. CBN has some great benefits in that it works as an antibacterial, anticonvulsant, and anti-anxiety medication. It can also help to induce sleep and enhance the body’s ability to de-stress.

CBD works to help reduce pain and inflammation, enhance the body’s natural ability to heal and recover from trauma and other medical conditions. Both products can be taken alone, or together to help improve the body’s ability to fight off a variety of ailments.
